Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, is a compelling stop for travelers who want to experience a dynamic urban center with a strong sense of local identity rather than a polished resort scene. Known as the “City of Heroes,” it offers a mix of colonial-era landmarks, bustling markets, modern malls, and a lively waterfront atmosphere, all threaded together by a reputation for resilience and entrepreneurship. The best time to visit is generally during the drier months, from May to September, when humidity is still high but rainfall is lower and sightseeing is more comfortable. This is a practical gateway to East Java as well, making it a useful base for combining city exploration with onward trips to volcanoes, temples, and coastal destinations.
Key sights include the historic Arab Quarter around Ampel, where the atmosphere is shaped by mosques, narrow lanes, and traditional commerce; the old port area of Tanjung Perak; and the city’s heritage streets and colonial buildings in central Surabaya. Families and first-time visitors often head to the House of Sampoerna, a well-curated museum in a Dutch colonial building that offers insight into the city’s tobacco history and industrial past. For a more contemporary feel, neighborhoods and districts such as Darmo and the central business area show the city’s modern side, while evening food streets and local markets reveal its everyday rhythm. Surabaya is also a destination for food lovers: try East Javanese specialties such as rawon, a rich black beef soup, rujak cingur, and sate klopo, along with the city’s famously bold, spicy flavors.
