Fes is one of North Africa’s most atmospheric destinations, a city where medieval history, living craft traditions, and everyday life still unfold inside one of the world’s best-preserved old cities. Its main draw is Fes el Bali, the sprawling UNESCO-listed medina of narrow lanes, hidden courtyards, and centuries-old madrasas, mosques, and foundouks. Travelers come for the sense of immersion: artisans hammering metal, dyeing leather, weaving textiles, and baking bread in communal ovens, all within a city that has long been a center of scholarship and Moroccan culture. Beyond the medina, the newer districts offer a more relaxed pace, with wider boulevards, gardens, cafes, and a clearer view of modern Fes.
The best times to visit are spring and autumn, when temperatures are typically comfortable for exploring on foot; summer can be very hot, while winter is generally mild but cooler in the evenings. Key sights include Al Quaraouiyine, often cited as one of the oldest universities in the world, the ornate Bou Inania Madrasa, the famous Chouara tanneries, and the panoramic viewpoints over the medina from the surrounding hills. For food, Fes is known for refined Moroccan cooking, including tagines, couscous, pastilla, and fragrant pastries, often paired with mint tea. The city’s appeal lies in its depth: it rewards slow wandering, curiosity, and an appetite for history, architecture, and traditional Moroccan hospitality.
