Colombo, Sri Lanka’s bustling capital, is a compelling entry point to the island: a city where colonial architecture, Buddhist and Hindu landmarks, seaside promenades, and a fast-evolving dining scene sit side by side. Travelers are drawn to its blend of old and new, from the historic charm of the Fort district and the market energy of Pettah to the leafy boulevards and beachfront atmosphere of Galle Face. It’s also a practical base for exploring the west coast while still offering enough character to merit a stay of its own.
The best time to visit Colombo is generally during the drier months from December to March, when humidity is somewhat lower and outdoor sightseeing is more comfortable. The city can be visited year-round, but the southwest monsoon typically brings heavier rains from May to September. Notable stops include the National Museum, Gangaramaya Temple, the colorful streets and markets of Pettah, and the coastal stretch around Galle Face Green and Mount Lavinia. Food is a major highlight: expect fragrant rice and curry, hoppers, kottu roti, fresh seafood, and strong tea, all reflecting the city’s mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, and broader South Asian influences.
